AARAU - Cantonal police arrested a 43-year-old Swiss man overnight after a shooting at a techno rave on the horse-racing track in Aarau. Maria Spinelli, a 22-year-old Italian woman, was killed. Several other people were injured. Aarau lies about 46 kilometres west of Zurich. The event was on Sunday.

The search lasted nearly a day. Police said the suspect was in custody shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, which was 11 p.m. GMT on Sunday. The arrest is the public fact of Monday morning. Investigators have not, in that first confirmation, set out a motive.

What is known on Monday

The victim's name and age, the place, the number of people described as injured, and the suspect's age and nationality are the details police and news agencies have put on the record. Shootings of this kind are rare in Switzerland. That does not make Monday a debate about gun law. It makes it a criminal investigation, which is now with the Aargau authorities.

Further charges and any court finding will come later. This report stops at the arrest.
