ZERMATT - High-alpine resorts are packing away a summer that looked busy in the villages and thinner on the ice. Hotel occupancy in Zermatt and the Jungfrau region held up, helped by heat in the cities. Guides say more high tours were rerouted or cancelled after rockfall and bare ice on routes that used to keep a snow ribbon into August.
The memory of the 2025 Blatten disaster in the Loetschental, covered in our Valais report, still sits over every conversation about slope safety. No mayor wants to be the person who left a path open a day too long.
Winter is not a reset button
Cable-car companies are spending more on monitoring and less on pretending the glacier is a permanent fixture. Low-snow winters already pushed investment toward autumn hiking and mountain-bike trails. That shift only works if the ground stays put.
Federal climate policy, including the 2035 framework, is written in tonnes of CO2. In Valais it is also written in closed red-and-white tape across a footpath.
