BERN - The 28 September ballot on the e-ID act is a remake with new scenery. The government says a state-backed electronic identity would let people open a bank account or access an authority without a paper pile. Privacy groups say the architecture still leans on private providers and stores too much.

A second item on the same Sunday would let cantons tax second homes in a new way, a fight between mountain communes and owners who already feel over-taxed.

Mistrust as a political fact

Pollsters found support and opposition almost even. That usually means a late argument about trust in Bern, not about the technical annex. The result is in our night report.
