BERN - Federal officials gave a late Friday briefing on the EU agreements package that the Council of States will open on Monday: dynamic adoption of EU law, wage protection for people working in Switzerland, and a safeguard clause if immigration rises too fast. From 28 September, senators will also argue whether the package should face only an optional referendum or a mandatory vote that needs a majority of cantons.
Unions say wage protection is the price of any yes. The right says dynamic adoption is the price of any no. The safeguard is the sentence written for voters who almost passed a population cap in June.
A sitting, then a Sunday
The session opens in our Monday report. Neutrality on 27 September will leak into these speeches whether the whips want it to or not.
