BERN - Polling stations opened on Sunday for a one-item federal ballot. Clerks in several Bernese communes said the stack of postal envelopes already looked larger than the queue at the door. That is normal. It is also how low-turnout Sundays are built.
In Basel the carnival timetable sat on every cafe table next to the voting card. Some residents voted on the way to buy piccolo reeds. The two calendars did not merge. They just shared a tram.
Numbers after dark
First projections were due in the late afternoon. The result report records what the envelopes said. Fasnacht, for its part, does not wait for projections.
