ECUBLENS - Migros is cutting 57 jobs at its food production facility in Ecublens, near Lausanne, the company confirmed on Tuesday. The positions go by the end of 2027 at the site's Fresh Food and Beverage Group operation.
"An analysis showed that the expected growth and profitability targets were not met by this division," a company spokesperson said. The reduction is part of a broader look at the retailer's industrial footprint, as weak consumer demand and cost pressure squeeze the food business.
Second cut in two years
For the workers in Ecublens, the announcement has a familiar ring. In 2025, Migros already cut 84 jobs at the same site when it closed its Micarna operation there. The new round removes a further slice of one of the Lausanne region's larger food industry employers.
The Vaud cut also extends a difficult season for Swiss consumer industries. In the Neuchatel Jura, Richemont has just reduced staff at Montblanc's watchmaking site in Le Locle, citing weak demand for entry and mid-range watches. Food retail faces its own version of the same problem: shoppers trading down while production costs stay high.
Union representatives in the region are expected to demand details of the social plan in the coming days. Migros said the redundancies will be spread over the coming year, with the full reduction completed by the end of 2027.
