BERN - Cantonal chancelleries reported the usual last-week surge in postal ballots for 30 November. Two initiatives on the paper lifted the pile a little, not a lot. Staff said the mix looked like a low-to-mid 40s turnout, pending Sunday walk-ins.

Campaign stands came down in rain on the Bahnhofplatz. That, too, is a Swiss November ritual. The cardboard slogans will not dry in time to matter.

Stations on Sunday

A modest number of people will still vote on the way to buy bread. They will not reverse a 20-point gap. They will decide whether the night looks merely clear or historic.
