BERN - Deputies returned for the summer session with farm, transport and digital-identity files on the desk. The e-ID act and a decree on cantonal taxes for second homes were already destined for 28 September. That made June less a closed room and more a rehearsal.

Heat in the capital did what it always does: shortened tempers on the terrace and lengthened the lunch break. The substance did not shrink with the patience.

Digital identity, again

Switzerland had already fought over e-ID once. Privacy campaigners said the new version was still too close to the state and to private contractors. The government said a modern administration cannot live on paper forever. Voters would settle it in our September 2025 report.
