BASEL - Christmas markets in Basel, Zurich and along Lake Geneva found their rhythm in the second week of December. Weeknight crowds looked more local than the December of the strong franc tourism years. Stallholders said they would take that, if the weather held.

Zurich kept its mix of old-town stalls and larger commercial sets. Montreux leaned on the lake and the extra trains. Basel, as usual, looked like it had been doing this since before marketing was invented.

A pause that is also a shop

Cities like the pictures. Neighbours like the extra trams late at night. Both got some of what they wanted. January will be quieter, and colder.
