CHIASSO - The morning crossing from Lombardy into Ticino still fills the trains and the road at an hour when Zurich is only starting to think about coffee. Hospitals, building sites and hotels in the canton would stop without that queue. Unions say some employers use it to hold down local wages. Employers say the canton would shrink without it.

The Sustainability Initiative's population cap would not close Chiasso tomorrow. It would hang over every hiring plan that assumes the border stays a labour market.

A June echo

Ticino's later housing and rail complaints sit in our September report. June's immigration Sunday will be heard on this platform first.
