SION - Valais winegrowers moved through the main harvest in the second week of October, with volumes described as acceptable after the late-April frost scare between Sion and Martigny. Higher sites that had been calmer in spring looked cleaner. A few hollows did not.

Seasonal crews, including workers who also pick in Lavaux, shuttled between slopes. Housing them remains harder than hiring them.

Tourism wants the picture

The terraces photograph well from a train. The work does not pause for the photograph. Growers wish visitors knew the difference. Visitors wish the tractor would smile.
