BERN - The Institute of Virology and Immunology said it had confirmed West Nile virus in a horse in Switzerland. The report was dated 26 August and published on the 27th. The horse had never been abroad, so the infection was acquired here. It is the first such case in a horse. Mosquitoes transmit the virus.
The institute called the finding unsurprising. Horses and people have been infected in several European countries this year, and some of those counts have risen sharply. Switzerland has been on this path in stages. In 2022 the virus was found in local mosquitoes in Ticino. In 2025 Ticino recorded the first human case caught inside the country.
North of the Alps is the new line
The horse case is being read as evidence that the virus is settling in parts of Switzerland north of the Alps, not only in the south. That is a geographic claim, not a prediction of an outbreak. It does mean animal owners and doctors above the Gotthard cannot treat West Nile as a Ticino file.
What changes for owners this week
There is no new national ban in Thursday's note. There is a confirmed infection, a reminder that mosquitoes are the route, and a summer that has already been warm enough, including on the lakes, to keep that route open. The heat on the southern side of the Alps is in our July Lugano report.
