BASEL - Street lights in Grossbasel and Kleinbasel went out at 4 a.m. on Monday as Morgenstreich opened Fasnacht. Cliques struck up the march that is only played on this morning. Lanterns did the lighting. Cafes served onion pie to people who had not been to bed.
SBB ran extra early trains into Basel SBB. Hotels had warned guests that 4 a.m. is not a metaphor. Police described the crowd as dense and the mood as concentrated rather than rowdy.
Seventy-two hours
The cortèges follow on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Endstraich is Thursday at 4 a.m. For how this morning looked last year, see the 2025 report.
