BERN - Supporters of the popular initiative titled Cash is freedom spent Friday arguing that coins and banknotes need a constitutional guarantee, not only a habit. They want the Swiss National Bank obliged to supply cash and the state barred from steering daily life onto cards alone.
The Federal Council says existing law already protects cash and asks voters to take the counter-proposal instead: a federal decree on currency and cash supply that writes a duty into the constitution without the initiative's harder edges. Retail groups note that cards already dominate city tills and that mountain kiosks still take notes.
Two yes boxes, one deciding question
Because the items are connected, the booklet includes a deciding question if both pass. Our later explainer is here.
