BLATTEN - Valais authorities widened the evacuation on Monday and ordered almost all of Blatten's 300 residents out, after monitoring showed the slope and glacier still moving. A few essential staff remained. Buses and private cars took families down the valley toward Wiler and beyond.
The order followed Sunday's rockfall and the earlier overnight move of more than 90 people. Geologists would not give a timetable. They gave distances instead.
What can be saved
Animals were moved where they could be. Papers and photographs went in bags. Houses stayed. That split is the whole mercy available in a valley this steep.
