GENEVA - Escalade weekend filled the old town with historical companies, families and the chocolate marmites that children smash. The commemoration sits on 12 December and spills across the nearest weekend. This year that meant a busy Saturday on the cobbles.
Police called the crowds dense and the mood as good as the weather, which was cold and dry. Cafes on the Left Bank ran extra sittings.

Missions know this weekend. Some of them even buy a pot. The Palais can wait until Monday. The city cannot.
