AIROLO - The Gotthard road tunnel saw a thick southbound flow on Saturday as school holidays ended in several cantons. Police reported the usual slow climb toward the portal and no unusual closures. On the rail side, SBB winter sports trains toward Ticino, Valais and Graubuenden were still well loaded.
Freight kept its night slots. The base tunnel takes the long-distance trains. The road tunnel still takes the families and the vans.
Steel on a different clock
Track work inside the base tunnel remains a multi-year story, logged earlier in our 2025 note. January traffic is the reminder that the mountain is a timetable, not a monument.
