LAUSANNE - Midday reports from communes in Vaud, Zurich and St. Gallen pointed to a turnout heading for the mid-fifties, in line with Friday's postal crates. French-speaking lakefront communes lagged. Schaffhausen, as usual, looked keener.

Five items did not produce five times the queue. They produced longer conversations at the table and a few spoiled ballots from people who ticked both cash texts and then asked what the deciding question meant.

The night will simplify

Television will reduce the day to four percentages and a turnout. The fuller night lead is in our result report.
