BERN - Swiss milk producers said May farm-gate prices still lagged feed, energy and labour on many hill farms. Processors said retailers would not wear a rise. The gap is old. The May letter made it official again.

Farms in Fribourg, Lucerne and the Jura were named in the union note. Valley farms with more volume complained less. That split inside the sector is as important as the fight with the shops.

Brussels in the background

A food-safety chapter in the EU package makes some producers ask who will inspect whom. That question will be louder by August. It is already in the canteen.
