ZURICH - Campaign posters for the 27 September neutrality initiative went up in stations in late August. The yes camp used short sentences about independence. The no camp used short sentences about security. Both used the Swiss cross as if it were a trademark they owned.
Station advertising is not subtle, which is the point. Most voters will not read the legal text. They will remember a slogan above the ticket machine.
The polls then and later
August still looked competitive in some private canvassing. By mid-September the published polls had moved to a clear no, as in our 16 September story.
