BRUNNEN - Official 1 August ceremonies at the Ruetli and in Brunnen put security, cohesion and the army into the presidential sentences. Guy Parmelin's year as president has been full of those words. Crowds along Lake Lucerne treated the evening as a Saturday holiday: flags, smoke, and a timetable home that slipped.
In Zurich the lake filled. In Geneva the parks filled. In mountain communes the bonfire was the entire event, as it was meant to be.
