BERN - Voters rejected a cut to the SRG licence fee, 62 percent to 38 percent, keeping the public broadcaster's main household levy. They also rejected a climate fund that would have spent 0.5 to 1 percent of GDP a year on climate and biodiversity, 71 percent to 29 percent, with no canton in favour. Turnout was 56 percent.

On the same Sunday, 54 percent accepted a shift toward individual taxation for married couples, and 73 percent accepted a counterproposal on cash in the constitution. It was a mixed night that nonetheless had a theme: expensive new machines lost, familiar ones were kept.

Green disappointment, again

Lisa Mazzone of the Greens said the climate remains a voter concern and that the fund was the wrong tool. It was the third climate-related proposal to fail since 2025, after February's environmental initiative and November's inheritance tax. The government would return with a more conventional framework in September.
